All of us have cultural and racial lenses through which we interpret the world. Understanding this is very important for educators, especially when working with children who are culturally and/or racially different from themselves. Their success depends upon educator understanding.
In this three-day training, educators learn to identify elements of their own cultural and racial lens, and consider how it influences their interactions with students.
Day One: Educators identify and examine their own cultural and racial background, and learn how the human brain uses this personal information to shape interactions with others.
Day Two: Educators learn that dominant and subordinate social groups exist in all societies, and how this impacts the lives of various racial and cultural groups in the United States.
Day Three: Educators put their new understandings to use by engaging in equity-related problem solving using school-based scenarios. In each scenario, social forces such as culture, race, class, gender, and religion play an important role in shaping outcomes.
