Sustainable Living in a Rainforest Community

In this 1-credit SP25 course we study three Global Goals through experiential learning. We will analyze what it means to consume less and how reducing our consumption will have a positive impact on our quality of life. To explore these issues, we will travel into the heart of the Bribri Territories of Costa Rica to share with a community of Indigenous people for whom consuming “stuff” has always been less important than other human pursuits like community, solidarity, and respect for Nature. We will explore their deep relationship with the tropical rainforest in which they live. We will examine how this value system impacts community goals, education systems, and plans for the future in the Bribri Territories.
At the end of this course students will be able to:
1. Explain how the Bribri community prioritizes sustainable consumption and production patterns (Global Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production).
2. Discuss how the Bribri’s value system promotes a different relationship with the planet than that of U.S. dominant culture (Global Goal 16: Peace, Justice, Strong Institutions)
3. Describe a way that they participated in actively caring for the Costa Rican rainforest through an eco-tourism service project (Global Goal 15: Life on Land)
Course Expectations:
2 in-person meetings (two hours each, dates/times TBA) to prepare for in-country visit
weekly readings/video and reflection journal assignments in January and February pre-trip (~ 1 hour per week) delivered via Brightspace, reflection journal while in Costa Rica, final reflection and journal submission due in midMarch.
